Hakea Saligna (Willow-Leaved Hakea) is a large, bushy shrub or small tree that grows up to 5-8 meters in height. It features narrow, elliptical leaves that can reach up to 100 mm in length and 20 mm in width, with a narrower variety that has leaves about 5 mm wide. The plant produces white flowers in the leaf axils, typically blooming in late winter to spring. After flowering, it produces woody seed pods containing two winged seeds, which are released when environmental conditions, such as a bushfire, trigger the pods to open.
Commonly planted as a small, bushy street tree, Hakea Saligna forms a neat, compact plant that thrives in a variety of climates, particularly in temperate and sub-tropical areas. This species is well-suited to a range of well-drained soils and performs best in an open, sunny position. It is a reliable species, often used as a rootstock for grafting more difficult-to-grow hakea species. The plant’s resilience and attractive foliage make it an excellent addition to various garden landscapes.
