Bursaria spinosa is a versatile and hardy Australian native shrub or small tree, typically growing 3–4 m tall. It produces abundant small, sweetly perfumed white flowers throughout summer, making it a standout feature in gardens.
The species naturally varies in form, from prostrate shrubs in exposed areas to small trees in sheltered sites, but in cultivation, it is usually grown as a small to medium shrub. Its dense, prickly foliage provides excellent habitat for birds, while the flowers attract butterflies and beneficial insects.
This resilient plant thrives in well-drained soils and full sun to partial shade, and is suitable for low-maintenance native gardens, hedges, and wildlife-friendly landscapes. Annual pruning helps maintain shape and encourages flowering.
