Its distinctive blue foliage creates a particularly strong visual effect when planted in groups or alongside green and flowering plants.

Hardy, drought tolerant once established and easy to maintain, Festuca glauca ‘Beyond Blue’ (Beyond Blue Fescue) is a practical choice for low-maintenance landscapes. Plant approximately 35–45 cm apart for borders, mass planting or groundcover.

Evergreen/Deciduous

Evergreen to semi-evergreen, depending on climate and growing conditions.

Intense powder-blue to silvery-blue foliage; silvery-blue flower stems that mature to pale tan or straw-brown.

Flowering Period & Fruit Development/Harvest

Slender flower plumes appear during late spring to summer, initially blending with the blue foliage before fading to light tan

Sun tolerance

Full sun is preferred for the strongest blue foliage colour. Light afternoon shade may be beneficial in particularly hot inland locations.

Maintenance

Low maintenance. Plant in freely draining soil and water regularly during establishment. Once established, water only during prolonged dry periods. Remove old or damaged foliage in late winter or early spring, and divide mature clumps approximately every 2–3 years to maintain a fresh, compact appearance. Avoid consistently wet or waterlogged soil.

Fibrous, compact and clump-forming. The plant develops a strong root system but does not spread through aggressive runners, making it manageable in garden beds and containers.
