Sporobolus virginicus (Marine Couch Grass) is a resilient coastal grass species that forms dense mats and spreads through creeping rhizomes, providing excellent ground coverage in challenging saline and sandy environments. It has fine green to blue green foliage that remains attractive throughout the year and tolerates flooding salt spray and drought conditions with ease.

This grass is commonly used in coastal restoration projects dune stabilisation and erosion control due to its strong binding root system. It produces small inconspicuous flower spikes followed by seeds that support local biodiversity and help natural regeneration in coastal landscapes. It is highly tolerant of salt wind and waterlogged soils making it suitable for harsh exposed environments where few other grasses survive. Once established it requires minimal maintenance and continues to spread slowly forming a stable and protective vegetative cover over time. It is valued for its durability adaptability and ecological role in coastal ecosystems making it a reliable choice for naturalised coastal planting restoration schemes also projects.
