Akebia quinata – Chocolate Vine

Akebia quinata, commonly known as Five-Leaf Chocolate Vine, is a vigorous perennial climber valued for its attractive foliage, unusual flowers, and delicate chocolate-like fragrance. Native to Asia, this fast-growing vine develops glossy dark green leaves arranged in distinctive clusters of five, creating dense coverage on suitable supports.

In spring, the vine produces dangling clusters of rich purplish-brown flowers with three petals. The flowers are particularly notable for their sweet, chocolate-like fragrance, which adds sensory interest to garden spaces. Under suitable conditions, flowering may be followed by unusual purple fruits resembling small eggplants in late summer.
