Allocasuarina distyla is a hardy, dioecious Australian native shrub known for its fine, segmented branchlets that resemble needles, giving it a soft yet structural appearance. Typically growing as a dense shrub, it forms a natural screen or windbreak, especially in exposed or coastal environments.
Instead of traditional leaves, the plant has slender, jointed branchlets with tiny scale-like teeth arranged in whorls. Male and female flowers occur on separate plants, with males producing elongated spikes and females developing woody cones. These cones contain dark winged seeds, adding subtle ornamental interest.
Adapted to sandy and nutrient-poor soils, Scrub She-oak is highly resilient to wind, drought, and coastal conditions. It also plays an important ecological role by improving soil fertility through nitrogen fixation and providing habitat for wildlife. Its tough nature makes it ideal for native gardens, coastal plantings, and erosion control.
