Artemisia frigida, commonly known as Prairie Sage or Fringed Sage, is a hardy, evergreen to semi-evergreen perennial valued for its finely divided, silvery-grey foliage and exceptional drought tolerance. Forming a soft, low-growing mound, its aromatic leaves provide beautiful texture and contrast throughout the year, making it a popular choice for rockeries, native gardens, cottage landscapes, and water-wise plantings. The delicate foliage releases a pleasant herbal fragrance when brushed or crushed.
In summer, slender stems rise above the foliage carrying small, inconspicuous yellow flower heads that attract beneficial insects. Native to the grasslands of North America, Artemisia frigida thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, tolerating poor, sandy, and rocky conditions with ease. Its resilience, low maintenance requirements, and attractive silver foliage make it an excellent addition to dry gardens, borders, and erosion-control plantings.
