Atriplex Nummularia (Old Man Saltbush) is a hardy perennial shrub native to the arid and semi-arid regions of Australia. It is widely recognised for its exceptional tolerance to drought, salinity, and poor soils, making it an important species for land rehabilitation and sustainable grazing systems. The plant typically forms a dense, rounded shrub with a greyish appearance due to its soft, scaly leaves. These leaves are thick, fleshy, and coated with fine salt-excreting glands that help the plant survive in saline environments. It commonly grows in floodplains, clay soils, and dry inland areas where conditions are harsh.
Old Man Saltbush produces small, inconspicuous flowers that are wind-pollinated, followed by papery seed bracts. It provides valuable fodder for livestock, especially sheep, due to its high nutritional and mineral content. The species also plays an important ecological role in preventing soil erosion and improving soil structure. Its resilience, low maintenance needs, and adaptability make it a key plant in arid landscape restoration and sustainable agricultural systems across Australia.
