Bougainvillea ‘Thai Gold’ (Thai Gold Bougainvillea) is an eye-catching evergreen climbing shrub prized for its full, double bracts. New displays open in rich burnt-orange, apricot and golden shades before gradually developing warm pink to cerise tones as they mature. Its loose, upright growth and long-lasting colour make it an outstanding feature for sunny courtyards, patios, fences, pergolas and large decorative containers.
This hardy, heat-loving Bougainvillea delivers its best flowering display in full sun and free-draining soil. It can be trained as a climber, maintained as a colourful shrub, shaped into a standard or grown in a large pot. Once established, it tolerates dry conditions and requires only occasional pruning, making it an excellent choice for customers seeking bold tropical colour without demanding garden care.

Mature height
Approximately 3–4 metres with suitable support, but it can be kept smaller in pots or as a regularly pruned shrub. Dimensions are approximate because growing habit varies with climate, support and pruning. ‘Thai Gold’ is also recognised under names including ‘Golden Doubloon’ and ‘Mahara Orange’.
Mature width
Approximately 3–4 metres when allowed to grow freely; it can be maintained narrower with regular pruning and training.
Spacing
Approximately 1.5–2 metres apart when planted along a fence, wall or support.
Evergreen/Deciduous
Evergreen in warm, frost-free climates. It may become semi-deciduous or lose some foliage during cold weather or after frost.
Foliage
Double burnt-orange, apricot and golden bracts that gradually fade or deepen to pink, carmine or cerise; medium-green foliage.
Flowering Period & Fruit Development/Harvest
Flowers mainly from spring through summer and into autumn, with intermittent or nearly year-round colour possible in warm climates. The colourful display is produced by double bracts surrounding very small true flowers; ornamental fruit is not a significant feature.
Sun tolerance
Full sun is recommended, with at least six hours of direct sunlight daily for the strongest flowering. It can tolerate partial shade, although flowering may be reduced.
Maintenance
Low to moderate. Water regularly while establishing, then allow the soil to dry slightly between watering. Feed during spring and summer with a flowering fertiliser and prune lightly after flowering to control size and encourage fresh growth. Wear gloves when handling its thorny stems.
Root System
Fine, fibrous and sensitive to disturbance. Generally considered non-invasive, but the root ball should be handled carefully during planting and the soil must remain free draining.
