Citrus × aurantium, commonly known as Seville or Bitter Orange, is a hybrid between pomelo (Citrus maxima) and mandarin (Citrus reticulata). This evergreen citrus tree is valued both for its distinctive, aromatic fruit and its ornamental appeal.
Seville oranges are characterized by their thick, rough, and bitter-skinned fruits, which are primarily used for marmalade production, culinary flavoring, and the extraction of essential oils. The fragrant white blossoms add ornamental beauty to gardens and attract pollinators such as bees.
While the fruit has culinary and perfumery uses, its bitter nature makes it less suited for fresh consumption. It is also used in herbal medicine as a stimulant and appetite suppressant, but caution is advised due to its potent active compound, synephrine.
