Citrus australasica ‘Australian Outback’ – Australian Finger Lime

Citrus australasica ‘Australian Outback’, commonly known as Australian Finger Lime, is an unusual Australian native citrus valued for its elongated fruits and distinctive caviar-like flesh. Native to the tropical and subtropical rainforest regions of eastern Australia, this attractive citrus can develop into a large shrub or small tree with aromatic foliage and attractive white to pale pink flowers.

The cylindrical fruits can develop in shades of green, yellow, brown, black or purple, with the interior ranging from green and yellow to pink. When ripe, the juicy vesicles have a tangy citrus flavour and a distinctive appearance that makes finger lime a sought-after culinary fruit.

Finger Lime performs best in nutrient-rich, organic soils with good drainage and consistent moisture. In temperate climates, a sheltered north-facing position with some protection from harsh conditions is beneficial. It can tolerate light frost and benefits from mulching and light annual pruning after fruiting.
