Doodia caudata is a striking Australian native fern, celebrated for its colorful and tactile fronds. Young fronds emerge with shades of rosy pink and bronze, maturing to a deep forest green, providing dynamic seasonal interest in shaded garden areas. The rough, sandpaper-like texture of the foliage gives this fern its “Rasp” nickname, making it both visually and texturally engaging.
This fern grows from short-creeping or tufted rhizomes and produces almost erect to decumbent fronds that are narrow-lanceolate and 15–30 cm high. Fronds are dimorphic, with the lamina ranging from almost membranous to leathery, one-pinnatifid to one-pinnate, and featuring free pinnae that are sessile to shortly stalked.
Sori develop along each side of the midrib, initially circular to elongate and eventually becoming confluent with age, aiding spore dispersal. Doodia caudata is well-suited to shaded or semi-shaded native gardens, woodland plantings, and areas needing low-maintenance, ornamental ferns.
