Gmelina leichhardtii (White Beech) is a significant Australian rainforest tree known for its valuable timber and attractive appearance. This large tree features a straight trunk with smooth, grey bark and a dense canopy of broad, glossy green leaves that provide excellent shade. In spring, it produces showy clusters of tubular, white to lilac flowers that are followed by fleshy, yellow fruits, making it an important food source for native birds and fruit bats.
Ideal for large gardens, parks, and rainforest restoration projects, White Beech thrives in deep, well-drained soils and prefers protected positions with adequate moisture. While it grows naturally in subtropical and tropical rainforests, it can adapt to warmer temperate climates. This tree is particularly valued for its quality timber, wildlife habitat value, and its role in supporting biodiversity in forest ecosystems.
