Hibiscus tiliaceus ‘Rubra’ is a striking evergreen tree or large shrub valued for its dramatic foliage and colour-changing flowers. Native to coastal regions, this variety is particularly admired for its deep red, heart-shaped leaves, which provide bold colour contrast throughout the year.
The large hibiscus flowers open bright yellow with a deep crimson centre, then gradually darken through orange to rich red over the course of the day before falling. This colour transformation creates continuous visual interest during the flowering season.
Naturally spreading with gracefully curving branches, ‘Rubra’ is well suited to coastal gardens, large landscapes, screening, and feature planting. It is highly tolerant of wind, salt spray, and heat, making it an excellent choice for seaside and subtropical environments.
