Hicksbeachia pilosa (Monkey Nut) is a unique and fascinating Australian rainforest tree known for its ornamental foliage and distinctive edible nuts. This small to medium-sized tree features large, glossy, deeply-lobed leaves that create a tropical appearance in the landscape. In spring, it produces long, pendulous flower spikes that develop into clusters of reddish-brown, hairy fruits containing edible nuts – a favourite food of native rodents and birds, making it valuable for wildlife gardens.
Ideal for subtropical gardens, rainforest restoration, and as a feature tree, Monkey Nut thrives in well-drained, fertile soils with protection from strong winds. It prefers partial shade but can tolerate full sun in cooler climates. This relatively slow-growing tree is particularly valued for its unique fruiting habit, ornamental appearance, and value as a food source for native wildlife.
The nuts of Hicksbeachia pilosa (Monkey Nut) are edible and valued as bush tucker, with a rich, creamy flavour similar to macadamias. Traditionally enjoyed by Indigenous Australians, they can be eaten raw or roasted, though the kernel is small and fiddly to extract. The tree also produces attractive foliage and ornamental red fruits, making it a dual-purpose addition to both gardens and bushfood landscapes.
