Hylocereus megalanthus, commonly known as Yellow Dragon Fruit or Yellow Pitaya, is a highly prized tropical cactus grown for its sweet, fragrant fruit. Often considered one of the best-tasting dragon fruits, it produces attractive climbing stems and large, fragrant flowers that open at night and close in the morning.
The self-fertile flowers generally appear from summer through autumn, followed by distinctive fruits that develop a vibrant yellow skin when ripe. Inside, the fruit contains delicious white flesh filled with small, black edible seeds. The fruit can be eaten fresh or used in salads, juices, smoothies and preserves.
Yellow Dragon Fruit is well suited to warm climates and performs best when grown with strong support such as a trellis or sturdy stake. In cooler regions, it can be grown successfully in a large container and protected from cold temperatures.
