Kennedia rubicunda, commonly known as Dusky Coral Pea or Red Kennedia, is a vigorous Australian native climber or creeper that brings dramatic colour and texture to gardens. Its rusty-hairy stems can extend over 5 m long, forming mats, colonies, or climbing up trellises and fences with ease.
The glossy green leaves are trifoliate, alternate, and ovate to broadly-elliptic, with each leaflet reaching up to 16 cm long and 6 cm wide, rounded or pointed at the apex. This dense foliage creates a lush, attractive backdrop for its iconic flowers.
Flowers are large, pea-shaped (papilionate), and deep red—sometimes with darker red-purple markings on the standard and keel. Each bloom measures up to 4 cm long and 2 cm wide and occurs in axillary clusters of up to 12 flowers. The flowering period spans spring to summer, producing a spectacular, profuse display. Following flowering, the plant develops linear to oblong pods up to 10 cm long, densely hairy, containing about 14 seeds each.
