Loropetalum chinense – Chinese Fringe Flower

Loropetalum chinense, commonly known as Chinese Fringe Flower, is an attractive evergreen shrub valued for its graceful arching form, colourful foliage and distinctive fringe-like flowers. Native to woodland areas of Southeast Asia, China and Japan, it is a versatile landscape plant that can be used as a hedge, screen, border plant or feature shrub.

The foliage may range from rich green to deep purplish tones, depending on the form, providing year-round interest even when the plant is not flowering. From late winter through spring and sometimes into early summer, clusters of narrow, strap-like flowers appear in shades of white, creamy white, pink or reddish-purple.

Loropetalum naturally develops an elegant, rounded habit with arching branches and generally requires little intervention once established. It is also relatively resistant to deer browsing and can be grown in a range of garden settings, including smaller forms suitable for containers and borders.
