Magnolia × soulangeana (Saucer Magnolia) is a beloved deciduous hybrid magnolia celebrated for its spectacular display of large, goblet-shaped flowers in early spring. This small to medium-sized tree produces an abundance of fragrant blooms in shades of white, pink, and purple, often with striking colour variations on the same plant. The flowers appear on bare branches before the foliage emerges, creating a dramatic seasonal show. The large, dark green leaves that follow provide shade through summer, with some varieties showing yellow-brown autumn colour.
Ideal as a feature tree in lawns, gardens, or as a street tree, the Saucer Magnolia thrives in well-drained, acidic to neutral soil and full sun. It prefers a sheltered position to protect the early blooms from frost damage. This magnolia is particularly valued for its magnificent floral display, moderate size, and classic beauty that makes it a centrepiece in spring gardens.
