Mahonia aquifolium, commonly known as Oregon Grape Holly, is a compact evergreen shrub valued for its year-round ornamental appeal and strong seasonal interest. It produces clusters of bright golden-yellow, lightly fragrant flowers in spring that attract pollinators and add vibrant colour to shaded garden areas.
Following flowering, it develops clusters of dark blue-purple edible berries that are attractive to birds and can also be used for jellies. Its holly-like foliage emerges bronze-red before maturing to glossy deep green, then often turning rich burgundy in autumn, making it a standout plant for shaded borders and naturalistic planting schemes.
