Nandina domestica (Sacred Bamboo) is a versatile evergreen shrub valued for its year-round interest and changing foliage colours. Despite its common name, it is not a true bamboo but features upright, cane-like stems with delicate, lacy foliage that emerges pinkish-red, matures to green, and turns brilliant red or purple in cooler weather. In summer, it produces sprays of white flowers followed by bright red berries that persist through winter, attracting birds to the garden.
Ideal for borders, containers, and mass plantings, Sacred Bamboo thrives in well-drained soil and full sun to full shade. It demonstrates excellent drought tolerance once established and adapts to various soil conditions. This low-maintenance shrub is particularly valued for its colourful foliage, winter berries, and ability to provide structure in garden designs.
