Ophiopogon japonicus ‘Nigrescens’ – Black Mondo Grass

Ophiopogon japonicus ‘Nigrescens’, commonly known as Black Mondo Grass, is a striking evergreen herbaceous perennial valued for its dramatic, dark foliage and compact, clumping growth habit. Its almost black, grass-like leaves create excellent contrast when planted alongside brighter foliage or colourful flowering plants.

In summer, small pink flowers appear among the foliage, followed by dark berries. While the flowers are relatively subtle, the distinctive foliage is the main feature of this versatile groundcover. ‘Nigrescens’ is well suited to borders, pathways, rockeries, containers and mass planting, and performs well in both full sun and part shade.
