Prostanthera ovalifolia – Mint Bush

Prostanthera ovalifolia is one of the most widely cultivated Australian mint bushes, valued for its rapid growth, highly aromatic foliage and spectacular flowering display. This attractive evergreen shrub typically grows to around 2.5m high and develops a naturally bushy form when regularly pruned.

The foliage can vary from oval and lance-shaped to almost rounded, with leaves releasing a refreshing mint-like fragrance when crushed. During its flowering season, the shrub can become covered with abundant purple to mauve flowers, although pink and white-flowering forms are also available.

Fast growing and versatile, Prostanthera ovalifolia is an excellent choice for informal screening, hedging, borders and native gardens. It prefers moist, well-drained soil with some protection from intense summer sun. Annual pruning of approximately one-third of the plant helps maintain a dense, attractive shape.
