Psychotria loniceroides (Hairy Psychotria) is an attractive Australian rainforest understorey shrub known for its lush foliage and ornamental berries. This dense, bushy shrub features large, glossy green leaves with prominent veining and a slightly hairy texture, giving it its common name. The plant produces small, white tubular flowers followed by clusters of vibrant red berries that are highly attractive to fruit-eating birds, making it an excellent choice for wildlife gardens and rainforest regeneration projects.
Ideal for shaded gardens, borders, and habitat planting, Hairy Psychotria thrives in well-drained, humus-rich soils and prefers partial to full shade. It is particularly well-suited to subtropical and tropical gardens but can adapt to warmer temperate climates with protection from frost. This low-maintenance shrub is valued for its ornamental berries, wildlife benefits, and ability to add tropical lushness to shaded areas.
