Pultenaea flexilis, commonly known as Graceful Bush-pea, is an erect Australian native shrub valued for its slender form, elegant foliage, and delicate pea-shaped flowers. Naturally occurring in heathlands, open woodlands, and sclerophyll forests, it is well-adapted to sandy or well-drained soils and sunny positions. This species adds a soft architectural texture to native gardens and bushland plantings.
The shrub features alternate, linear-obovate to narrow-obovate leaves, 8–20 mm long and 2–4 mm wide, with acuminate tips. The margins are flat or slightly incurved, with the lower surface darker than the upper. Stipules are 2–4 mm long and subtly accentuate the pea-family character.
Flowers are terminal or subterminal, 8–10 mm long, arranged in lax, leafy clusters without bracts. Each flower has a calyx 3–5 mm long, sparsely hairy or glabrous, with acuminate lobes, and pedicels of 2–5 mm. Bracteoles are small, linear-ovate to ovate, and attach at the base or lower calyx tube. Following flowering, turgid pods 6–9 mm long develop, persisting on the shrub and adding ornamental interest.
Pultenaea flexilis is low-maintenance, hardy, and suitable for hedges, feature plantings, or pollinator-friendly gardens.
