Rhododendron Vireya (Vireya Rhododendron) is an attractive tropical evergreen shrub valued for its glossy foliage and spectacular clusters of trumpet-shaped flowers. Assorted varieties may produce blooms in white, yellow, orange, pink, red, peach or attractive blended shades, bringing vibrant colour to sheltered garden beds, patios and decorative containers.

Rhododendron Vireya (Vireya Rhododendron) flower in seasonal flushes and may bloom several times throughout the year in warm, favourable conditions. Their compact growth, lush foliage and sometimes fragrant flowers make them an excellent choice for customers wanting an unusual tropical feature plant. They perform best in bright filtered light, warm conditions and an open, slightly acidic growing medium with excellent drainage.

Mature height

Approximately 0.5–3 metres, depending on the cultivar and growing conditions. Compact varieties may remain around 1 metre, while larger selections can exceed 2 metres.

Foliage

Glossy green foliage with white, cream, yellow, orange, peach, pink or red flowers, depending on the variety supplied.

Flowering Period & Fruit Development/Harvest

Produces clusters of funnel-shaped, tubular or bell-shaped flowers, often in several flushes throughout the year. Flowering is commonly strongest during autumn and spring in warm Australian conditions. Fruiting is not normally considered an ornamental feature.

Sun tolerance

Bright filtered light, morning sun or partial shade. Protect from intense afternoon sunlight.

Maintenance

Moderate. Water thoroughly, then allow the growing medium to partially dry before watering again. Protect from waterlogging, frost and drying winds. Feed lightly during active growth and pinch or prune young plants carefully to encourage compact branching.

Root System

Shallow, fine and fibrous root system. It prefers a restricted root zone and an open, free-draining, slightly acidic potting mix. Avoid planting too deeply.
