Ribes Nigrum (Black Currant)

Ribes Nigrum (Black Currant) is a compact deciduous fruiting shrub valued for its clusters of glossy, deep purple-black berries and attractive lobed green foliage. Small pale green to yellow-green flowers appear in spring, followed by richly flavoured berries in early to mid-summer. The fruit has a distinctive tart flavour and is widely used for jams, jellies, sauces, juices, desserts and preserves. Black currants are also naturally high in vitamin C. 

Easy to incorporate into productive gardens, berry patches and edible landscapes, Black Currant performs best in a cool climate with a period of winter chilling. It prefers fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil and a sunny position protected from strong hot winds. Once established, regular winter pruning encourages fresh young growth, as the best crops are produced on younger stems.
