Sempervivum spp., commonly known as “Hens and Chicks,” is a hardy, rosette-forming succulent that produces a large central rosette—the “hen”—surrounded by numerous smaller rosettes called “chicks.” As the plant matures, the central rosette may die, while the surrounding chicks continue to grow and propagate, creating a self-renewing cluster.
These succulents are extremely versatile, thriving in rock gardens, container arrangements, alpine gardens, and xeriscaping designs. They are drought-tolerant, low-maintenance, and ideal for sunny, well-drained locations. Dividing and replanting the chicks is easy, making propagation simple for gardeners of all levels.
