Sterculia quadrifida (Peanut Tree) is a distinctive Australian native tree known for its unique foliage, ornamental flowers, and interesting fruit. This small to medium-sized tree features broad, heart-shaped leaves that create a dense, shady canopy. In spring, it produces unusual yellow-green to orange flowers without petals, followed by eye-catching boat-shaped seed pods that split open to reveal black seeds resembling peanuts – hence its common name. These seeds are edible and attractive to wildlife.
Ideal for coastal gardens, parks, and tropical landscapes, the Peanut Tree thrives in well-drained soils and full sun. It is highly tolerant of coastal conditions, including salt spray and sandy soils. This drought-tolerant tree is particularly valued for its unique ornamental qualities, wildlife benefits, and ability to provide shade in warmer climates.
