Toona Sinensis, commonly known as Chinese Cedar, is a fast-growing deciduous tree valued for its elegant upright form and long, finely divided foliage. New leaves often emerge with attractive bronze to reddish tones before maturing to rich green, then turning yellow during autumn. Fragrant white flowers are carried in large, drooping panicles during summer, creating a light and graceful display above the leafy canopy.
Ideal as a feature tree for spacious gardens, parks, avenues and screening, Chinese Cedar provides rapid height, seasonal colour and cooling summer shade. Its young shoots are traditionally used as a vegetable in parts of Asia, adding edible interest alongside its ornamental qualities. Flowering Period & Fruit Development/Harvest
Fragrant white flowers appear in long, drooping panicles during summer. Brown, capsule-like fruits containing winged seeds may develop afterwards.
Sun tolerance
Full sun. Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained soil; a sheltered position is beneficial for protecting tender new spring growth.
Maintenance
Low to moderate. Water regularly during establishment, mulch to retain moisture and prune during dormancy when required to maintain shape or remove damaged branches. Monitor and remove unwanted suckering growth.
Root System
Vigorous and spreading, with the ability to produce root suckers in some locations. Avoid unnecessary root disturbance and remove unwanted suckers where a single-trunk specimen is preferred.
