Trimezia longifolia, formerly known as Neomarica longifolia, is an attractive tropical perennial featuring upright, sword-shaped green foliage that adds structure and texture to garden beds. Its neat, clumping habit makes it ideal for shaded borders, pathway edging, courtyard gardens and decorative containers. The accepted botanical name is Trimezia longifolia, while Neomarica longifolia is now treated as a synonym.
During the warmer months, slender flower stems carry delicate golden-yellow blooms decorated with distinctive chocolate-brown markings around the centre. Although individual flowers are short-lived, they are produced repeatedly over an extended flowering season. Small plantlets may also develop on older flowering stems, creating the unusual “walking” growth habit that gives this easy-care plant its common name.
