Viminaria juncea (Golden Spray / Native Wattle)

Viminaria juncea, commonly known as Golden Spray or Native Wattle, is a graceful Australian native that can be grown as either a shrub or small tree. It is prized for its slender, pliant stems and airy, cascading crown of soft green foliage, which adds movement and texture to any garden.

This species grows to around 6 m high with a narrow spread when trained to a single trunk, or can be maintained as a multi-stemmed shrub for a more informal look. The dark fibrous trunk contrasts beautifully with the bright grassy-green shoots, which are smooth, flexible, and resilient even in stormy conditions. Small yellow flowers appear in spring, creating a delicate golden display that attracts birds and pollinators.

Viminaria juncea thrives in well-drained soils in full sun to part shade and tolerates moderate drought once established. Its adaptability and low-maintenance nature make it ideal for screening, naturalistic plantings, and coastal or riverbank gardens.
