Viola odorata, commonly known as Sweet Violet, is a charming evergreen to semi-evergreen perennial treasured for its delightfully fragrant flowers and attractive heart-shaped foliage. Blooming in late winter and spring, its delicate violet-purple flowers create a colourful carpet in shaded gardens while filling the air with a sweet perfume. The edible blooms are widely used to decorate desserts, flavour candies, and create traditional syrups and liqueurs.
This low-growing, spreading plant forms dense clumps through creeping runners, making it an excellent groundcover for woodland gardens, borders, underplanting shrubs, and containers. Easy to grow and low maintenance, Sweet Violet thrives in cool, moist conditions and attracts bees and other beneficial pollinators to the garden.
